As Rutgers Alumni we share many common
interests but the one bond that ties us all
together is that we rowed on the Raritan .
During our academic careers at Rutgers
University , we chose to accept the challenge of
participating in a sport that is as physically
demanding as the classroom is mentally
challenging.
In a day and age where people seem to
know the cost of everything and the value of
nothing, rowers understand the value of the
lessons learned at the boathouse. For the board
members of ROAR, it is the reason we decided to
dedicate the time and energy to ensure that
others will have similar opportunities. For
those of you who also feel indebted to Rutgers
crew, ROAR is an opportunity to give something
back. | |

ROAR’s GOALS Primary 1) Endow a
lightweight racing shell. 2) Supplement the
lightweight coach’s income and benefits. 3)
Provide opportunities for underprivileged New
Brunswick kids to participate in summer rowing
programs.
Secondary 1) Provide
scholarships. 2) Sponsor student-athlete
housing. 3) Support Rutgers athletes in
Olympic training.
Are these goals
realistic? This is contingent on
the resolve of our alumni. Similar foundations
are in place at Princeton and Cornell, which
lends strongly to the winning tradition of those
programs |

On
May 23rd, ROAR hosted its first
summer barbeque in Donaldson Park, Piscataway.
Twenty alumni lightweights enjoyed a
copious spread of fruits,
vegetables, chicken and steak. ROAR was very
pleased to also host the current lightweight
team, which was training for the IRA regatta.
After eating lunch, the alums and current rowers
mixed it up for a game of softball.
Annual Golf
Outing On August 29th 2004, ROAR
held its first annual charity golf event at
Gamblers Ridge in Cream Ridge, NJ. The golf
outing was open to everyone, including members,
non-members, family and friends. About 20 lwt
alums attended, and many brought family and
friends to play. The event raised over a
thousand dollars for the foundation, but more
importantly gave us all a good reason to get
together and meet with other former lwts.

Homecoming Weekend Alumni Row and Barbeque
Join us for an alumni
row on homecoming weekend
(October 16th).
For
several years the Boathouse has welcomed back
alumni on homecoming and allowed those
interested to get back on the water. This year
ROAR will be teaming up with
the boathouse staff to make the alumni row the
biggest ever.
The alumni row will begin
at 8 am and run until 9:30.
This year we hope to get family and friends into
the boats, so please bring your wives, sons and
daughters. Afterwards, there will be snacks and
drinks at the boathouse. After the row, many
alumni will be attending the homecoming football
game. We have arranged a block of tickets
through the athletic department.
To
reserve a ticket to the game, please contact
Jordan Katz no later than October 1st .
(973 476-9085) Please note, you do not
have to attend the football game to participate
in the alumni row. |
